Preventing the Spread of Illness
First and foremost, educate employees about preventing the spread of illnesses, and have an illness plan in place.
Keep hands washed
- Keep hand sanitizer on your desk, and in other high traffic areas.
Makes sure surfaces are clean and sanitized.
- Key areas to keep clean include desks, keyboards, tables, mouses, meeting room remotes/equipment and doorknobs.
If You’re Ill
Always sneeze into the crook of your elbow
- Someone who is ill should avoid shaking hands, sharing food, or using someone else’s computer.
Work from your home if your company allows that options
- If not, let people know that you’re not feeling well so that they may take their own precautions.
If it’s necessary that you attend a meeting, the CDC suggests staying at least 6 ft. Away from the rest of the group.
- If you’re sick, stay home.
- Keep hands thoroughly washed.
- Keep surfaces clean.
- Keep hand sanitizer nearby and use it often.
Workplace Illness Prevention Plan
Having a workplace illness prevention plan can help everyone take action to avoid the spread of illness, and therefore reduce absenteeism and presenteeism.
The policy should include a cleaning plan that ensures that high traffic areas get cleaned and sanitized.
The illness policy should include a course of action that employees should take when they become ill.
- This should include suggesting that they stay home and work, or take other measures to prevent the spread of illness to their coworkers.
Employees should never feel that they’ll be penalized for putting their health before work.
