Course Overview

Micro-inequities and micro-aggressions are subtle actions or messages that devalue people based on traits like race, sex, or disability. These behaviors are often unconscious and fueled by internal biases. For instance, asking everyone’s opinion in a meeting except a person of color is a micro-inequity, while telling an African-American coworker she doesn’t sound black is a micro-aggression. Though they seem small, their cumulative effect can marginalize coworkers, destroy morale, and reduce productivity.

Eliminating these behaviors requires self-reflection and a conscious effort to change. Recognizing that coworkers face daily slights is crucial to eradicating the problem. Addressing personal biases, often formed from childhood experiences, is necessary to curb behaviors that demean others. Effective intervention, usually in private, can help reduce bias and promote inclusion.

Micro-affirmations are the antidote to these negative behaviors. They are tiny acts of kindness and inclusion, such as recognizing good ideas, making eye contact, and giving credit where it’s due. These positive actions can spread and transform workplace culture, making it more welcoming and inclusive. By fostering a supportive environment, organizations can enhance employee morale, productivity, and innovation.
