MEWPs. "Mee-yoops". Sure, it's a funny word, but Mobile Elevating Work Platforms are game-changers when it comes to working safely and efficiently at heights. Also known as aerial lifts, scissor lifts, or boom lifts, these versatile machines are designed to provide a stable, secure platform that can help lift you and your tools up to those hard-to-reach workspaces—and get things done.

But their power and worksite advantages also come with unique hazards that need to be properly understood to stay safe on the job.

That's why the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Scaffold and Access Industry Association (SAIA) have developed the A92.22 standard – to provide a clear, comprehensive guide to MEWP safety. And that's exactly what this training is all about.

In this course, we'll cover the essentials for operating MEWPs safely and effectively. You'll learn about the different categories of MEWPs and the unique hazards associated with each. But we don't just focus on the equipment—we also cover the importance of job site risk assessments, equipment inspection, and maintaining constant awareness of your surroundings while operating.

What are some of the most significant safety hazards when operating MEWPs?


Operating MEWPs involves several risks. According to OSHA, key safety hazards include falls from elevated levels, objects falling from lifts, tip-overs and ejections from the lift platform, structural failures such as collapses, electrocutions from electric shock, entanglement hazards with surrounding objects, and contact with overhead obstacles like ceilings.


What is the difference between Group A and Group B MEWPs?


Group A MEWPs have platforms that stay within the tipping lines for enhanced stability. Group B MEWP platforms can extend beyond the tipping lines, requiring additional safety precautions.


What is the difference between Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 MEWPs?


Type 1 MEWPs can only travel with the lift stowed. Type 2 MEWPs can travel with the platform elevated but are controlled from the chassis. Type 3 MEWPs can also travel with the platform elevated but can be controlled from the platform itself.


Are fall arrest systems required for occupants of Group B MEWPs?


Yes, ANSI safety standards mandate that all occupants of Group B MEWPs use fall arrest systems due to the risk posed by their extended and often mobile platforms.


What is the required minimum safe distance from power lines when operating MEWPs?


MEWP operators must maintain a minimum safe distance of at least 10 feet from power lines to ensure safety and comply with ANSI guidelines.
