Course Overview

Workplace fatigue is an issue in all areas, from office jobs to factories to roadways and healthcare settings! Fatigue caused by long hours, lack of sleep, and environmental factors can lead to decreased productivity, errors, and even accidents. Fatigue is more than just being tired, it's a combination of physical and psychological factors that lead to the inability to make good decisions, poor coordination, and lack of motivation. Luckily, there are strategies both employers and workers can take to combat workplace fatigue and its effects.

There are certain steps workers can take to combat workplace fatigue. Preventative measures include making sure to get enough sleep. It's recommended that adults get 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Having good sleep habits, like creating a good sleep environment through proper temperature, lighting, and noise creates the optimal condition for restful sleep. It's also recommended to avoid caffeine near bedtime. Getting regular exercise and sticking to a healthy diet also promotes good sleep. If fatigue does hit at work, employees can take a walk, stretch, talk to a friend, or drink caffeine to combat its effects.

Employers also have a responsibility to recognize and mitigate workplace fatigue. By optimizing schedules to allow for regular sleep, permitting times of rest when possible, educating employees on the importance of sleep, and promoting a culture of sleep wellness, employers have the power to help prevent workplace fatigue. Taking the time to prevent fatigue saves time and money in the long run. An additional step companies can take is to institute a Fatigue Risk Management System which is a scientific approach to sleep that follows 5 levels to eliminate the issue.

This course will give you the information you need to prevent and counteract workplace fatigue. Being alert on the job is the best way to get the work done quickly and safely!

No Worries. Here’s Some Helpful Info.

Is workplace fatigue different from being tired?

Yes. Fatigue is a combination of factors, including time awake, time of day, and workload.

What is the Fatigue Risk Management System?

It is a scientifically based study of sleep that provides employers with a system to identify and manage fatigue in the workplace.

How is fatigue in the workplace dangerous?

Fatigue affects the health and safety of employees, their colleagues, and others. Fatigue affects workers’ reaction time, coordination, task motivation, processing, and judgment, leading to errors or accidents that may cause injury or fatalities.

How can workers combat workplace fatigue?

Workers can ensure they get restful sleep daily by allowing enough time between shifts to rest and recover. Following a healthy diet and getting exercise may also help prevent fatigue. If fatigue sets in, moving and talking to others can help combat its effects.

How can employers help prevent fatigue?

Employers should optimize schedules, allow breaks for rest, educate employees, and promote a culture of sleep wellness to help prevent fatigue among their workers.
